The Gold Leaf Tree ornament was one of our first pieces and is still one of our most popular items. The design went through several iterations, it is amazing how small changes can change the overall look of the product. What really makes the tree stand out, in our opinion, is tree’s trunk piece which is individually shaped and carved into a gentle taper guiding the eye to the main part of the tree which is enhanced with a layer of distressed gold-coloured metal leaf on the front face. The shimmering gold reflects beautifully when placed near fairy lights, creating a magical ambiance in your home.
Making The Gold Leaf Tree Ornament
Here a the key stages in making this item.
- The tree is crafted from high-quality Scandinavian redwood which is light and workable but still durable with lovely grain texture.
- The base is ripped and crosscut and then a 45 degree chamfer is added
- The base is then drilled for a dowel joint
- The trunk piece is cut to a rectangle so it can be accurately drilled for dowels
- The trunk piece is then shaped by cutting to a taper and then carving with an electric rotary disk this give a natural bark effect.
- Finally the trunk piece is stained a dark brown to contrast with the gold finish.
- The main part of the tree is mark the rough cut on the bandsaw and then the first angle is cut on the mitre saw, followed by a final cut on the table saw.
- Saw marks are then added to provide a rustic texture
- The corners are then rounded for safety and a chamfer is added to both sides.
- All parts are sanded and assembled before we add a smoked oak hard wax oil finish.
- The gold (metal) leaf is then added and the gold leaf is varnish to prevent oxidisation and discolouring. See our gilding process here
