Thoughtfully Detailed Design

Much thought went into deigning  our handmade Christmas Robin. We wanted it to be immediately recognisable as a robin but have a stylised look made up of simple shapes  We think our robin with with a unique combination of straight and curved edges, projecting wings and upright tail feathers comes together to add depth and character to its appearance. The metal legs and short metal beak give it an authentic and durable finish, ensuring it stands out as a unique piece in your decorations. Painted in vibrant red on its chest and head, it captures the beloved hues we associate with robins during the Christmas season.

Making The Rustic robin

Here a the key stages in making this  item.

• The Robin is crafted from high-quality White Oak which is strong and durable with lovely grain texture. the robins legs and beak are made from bright steel rod.
• The base is ripped and crosscut and then a 45 degree chamfer is added
• The base is then drilled for the metal legs
• The body piece is marked on a piece of dimensioned wood and the shape is carefully cut on a bandsaw
• The body piece is then taken to it’s finished shape on a disk sander
• A template is then used to make sure the eye position is the same on both sides. The eyes an marked with a punch before being drilled out on both side using a pillar drill..
• The robins body is then placed in a jig which allows the leg holes to be drilled at a slight angle which is much more appealing to the eye.
• another jig is used to mark the position of the beak
• More Oak is re-sawn to form narrow trips and is then dimensioned of the planner thicknesses.
• The wings and body are marked, cut on the bandsaw and finished on the disk sander
• The wings and tail are then glued to the body
• The legs are glued and inserted using a small jig to ensure the project equally on both sides (nobody wants a wonky Robin)
• once the legs are fully dried into the body they are inserted into the base.
• The robin is sanded and the face is painted red.
• The small beak is then inserted.before we add a smoked oak hard wax oil finish.
